Sintrata

Humanitarian Category for Student Groups

Mexico City

The Sintrata student group was formed in 2011 at the UIA at the initiative of two students who, after meeting a young survivor of sexual exploitation, began visiting classrooms to talk about human trafficking. This group also acts as a catalyst and channel for volunteers who have become key to materialize research projects, education, support for the reintegration of survivors of human trafficking and collection of Sintrata. The mission of the student group is to contribute to the prevention and to talk about human trafficking and exploitation. Its objectives are to sensitize and organize CDMX university communities about the problem, and to support the reintegration of crime survivors.

The main activities carried out by the Sintrata student group are:

  • Organization of spaces and meetings for university reflection through forums, workshops and activations on issues of trafficking, sexual and labor exploitation, gender violence and sustainable consumption, among others.
  • Coordination efforts and the collection of human and material resources to support the reintegration processes of sexual exploitation survivors in Mexico through donations and different activities.
  • They formed a student space that led to the creation of the Civil Association which today is one of the most active organizations in the Latin American region in the work against human trafficking. It achieved alliances with institutions such as the UNODC, organizations and transnational companies. It had an impact on prevention and access to justice, which has been replicated in countries such as Guatemala, Panama and Costa Rica. They also created a volunteer body that carried out preventive interventions, reaching a total of 175,000 minors and people in communities at risk.
  • The group participated in the organization and management of recreational and pedagogical activities for 300 survivors of human trafficking.

Today Sintrata continues to grow and with many projects ahead, the satisfaction of being able to reach many people and manage to raise awareness about the problematic, supporting victims´ processes and the large community that has been formed are reasons for recognition for all the people who are part of the group's history.
